A professional health practitioner
In a connected and globalised environment, where clients are very well
informed, there is a strong expectation that the personal trainer must be
knowledgeable with all that is current in health, fitness and wellness. All
personal trainers should have valid certifications in cardio-pulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid at the very least and must be familiar
with medical emergency procedures.
A personal trainer must be well-networked in that he/she does not
act beyond his/her area of expertise and render inappropriate and
unqualified advice. A good personal trainer has formal and strong
relationships with medical and sport doctors, physiotherapists, dieticians,
massage therapists, chiropractors, athletic trainers, and other personal
trainers.
Preferably, they should have memberships and affiliations to national
and international professional bodies like the Singapore Physical
Education Association, the Singapore Fitness Instructors’ Association,
the Sports Medicine and Sports Science Association, or the National
Coaches Registry of the Singapore Sports Council, the American College
of Sports Medicine, the National Strength and Conditioning Association
or the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science.
